About Me

Hi, I'm Stephen Stumbo, I'm 18 yrs old, and a self taught knifesmith/blacksmith. All through my childhood I've had affinity for blades, probably starting with my first pocket knife. At 12 I tried to grind a knife out of a sawzall blade, and was so proud of how it turned out. At 14 I convinced my dad to help me make a forge so I could try blacksmithing. After building the forge I had a rough time getting started, but after meeting a local blacksmith and getting some tips, I went at it. About a year into blacksmithing (2009) I decided to try my hand at making knives. I started out terribly, but I've slowly been progressing to where you see now. Take a look around, and let me know what you think, you can also find me on facebook to keep up with the goings on around the ole smithy.

Grinder!!!

YAYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The motor came in Monday, but I was out of town till yesterday evening. So, I wired it yesterday, and mounted the motor and vfd today. This thing is really nice running, so far I'm running it at around 40% at the fastest, but am starting to become more comfortable with it. My camera was dead on battery, so no pics of wiring or mounting, but I do have finished photos.

Giving the grinder a test run

I ordered a glass platen liner, it came in today, and after grinding today, I can see why the glass platen will be nice, it got hot! I also grabbed some other stuff, a handful of earplugs, the cool ones with flames, and some glow in the dark paracord.

And from Amazon I ordered some safety goggles, and a respirator, as well as two extra filters.

  1. Hey, be aware that most cinderblocks will explode if they are too hot. Also, I am starting smith and I built a forge out of granite stones. I really need some help starting out. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
